Mount Damavand (35 °North, 52 ° East), a potentially active volcano, is said to be the highest mountain in the Middle East and one of the highest freestanding mountains in the world. Located only 60 kilometers (37 miles) off the Caspian Sea to the North, and 66 kilometers (41 miles) from the capital Teheran, in the South; it is the deathbed of Zahaak, an evil figure in the Persian mythology.

In a good visibility, a very rare occurrence, Damavand can be seen from most neighborhoods in Tehran and from far away from further cities.
